What makes a great leader? Some might say greatness is rooted in power, and the ability to command a group or collective in any way the leader sees fit. If you’re trying to improve your leadership skills, however, then this is probably not the best mentality to have, since this can come off as arrogant to your followers. A lot of the traits that make a good leader revolve around consideration for your followers or team members. Whether you’re leading a large corporation or a small group, these tips can help you become the best leader you can be.
Acknowledge the value of your team. Recognize that every single member of your team is an integral component of reaching your collective goals. It’s important to outwardly acknowledge to your teammates the impact they make with their hard work. Recognizing the value and potential someone has greatly encourages morale. A good leader is someone who appreciates their team and therefore motivates them to strive for success!
Show respect to earn respect. Everyone has the right to be treated with respect, and this is especially true within a team. As a leader, it is important that you receive respect from your team since this will ensure that they will abide by your decisions. As stated in the previous point, every member of your team is important. Therefore, you should treat them with kindness and respect. Most of us have had a superior or leader who would belittle you and/or your coworkers. You probably lost respect for that individual, correct? Your willingness to complete tasks for them most likely dwindled, which hurts the entire company/organization. Remember that happy employees and team members are beneficial to the success of your group.
Learn to prioritize. Some leaders believe that their team must always have something to do, but this isn’t always true. Busyness does not mean you’re being productive. This doesn’t mean that nothing should be done, but the tasks you assign to your team should revolve around improvement and growth. Maybe a member of your team needs to build confidence. Assign them tasks that will help them gain self-confidence and faith in their own skills. Have them run workshops on a variety of processes associated with your group. This is beneficial for the whole team as well as helping that individual grow.
Attract a cooperative team with your attitude. If you’re a positive leader, one who doesn’t quit and pushes forward during strife, then your team will admire your attitude. A strong and positive attitude is contagious, and most people prefer surrounding themselves around positive people. This will help you build the influence you need to inspire your team.
While some people are natural born leaders, others might not yet have the skills to successfully lead. The good news? Leadership skills can be learned through practice and dedication. Give these tips a try and see for yourself
