LinkedIn is an online tool for connecting professionals with potential investors, employers, and recruiters, and it currently has a user base of over 450 million people. Your profile represents so much more than your resume; it gives you the chance to tell your story, discuss your ambition, and establish your personal brand. Pick an Appropriate Profile Picture A good profile picture leads to more page views and connection requests, according to an article written by LinkedIn itself. Your picture affects viewer’s first impression of you, so it is important to choose carefully. A professional headshot is best, but if that isn’t affordable for you, a good close-up is a preferable alternative (full-body shots are difficult to see clearly on a thumbnail). Be sure to pick an appealing background photo as well.
Use the Summary Section The summary section of your profile isn’t the same as in a professional resume. In a resume, the summary is usually reserved for your best accomplishments. In LinkedIn, there’s more than enough space to tell your story beyond your accomplishments. You can write a short account of your career’s past as well as your future goals. Use this section to also provide context of your work, and/or write about how your work impacts the people around you. If you are representing a business, sharing the story of its foundation is a great option as well. Storytelling can be a valuable use of this feature, but use it within reason; most people won’t spend the time to read a novel.
Use Keywords When you use job-related keywords in your profile, you’ll be more likely to show up in viewer’s search results for your field. For example, if you’re a copywriter, some potential keywords to use are “landing page,” “copywriter,” and “technical copywriting.” You don’t need to flood your page with words like these; make sure to be descriptive. Including the most popular, relevant keywords will expose your profile to more prospective employers/investors.
Make Your Contact Information Accessible Depending on privacy settings, users who end up on your profile via Google may not be able to see your contact information. Hiding your phone number from public search results makes sense, but hiding your professional email can lead to lost opportunities. It is important to adjust your privacy settings accordingly; preserve your sensitive information, but also make yourself available to prospective collaborators.
